BeebMaster's Domesday Machine
Required ComponentsBelow is a table listing all the individual parts required to put together a Domesday System.
When I first put up this page in 2003, many of the items listed were just text descriptions of the parts needed. Gradually they were converted into picture links of my own kit as I got hold of more component parts. I now have all the items required for a Domesday System, but my own machine has been assembled from original individual component parts from numerous sources rather than being obtained as a complete official Domesday System.
In some cases, I've been able to amass duplicate items, which are always very handy to have when working with such fragile hardware. The picture links below will take you to pages showing all of the component parts I hold for Domesday.
![]() BBC Master 128 |
The BBC Master 128 is the base computer for the Domesday System, in a special upgraded configuration called the Master AIV. My own Domesday Machine started life with a basic Master 128, shown here, which has now had all the required upgrades added. The only difference is that the Acorn Master AIV has its own "AVC" product code in contrast to the usual Master 128 "AMB15" number. |
![]() Internal 65C102 Co-Processor |
The 65C102 co-processor is the Master Series equivalent of the 6502 cheese wedge introduced for the BBC Micro, although the wedge works just as well on a Master and even with Domesday. |
![]() SCSI Interface |
One of the rarest Acorn 8-bit things, a specially designed internal fitting SCSI interface board for the Master 128, believed to be only used in the Domesday System |
![]() VideoDisc Filing System ROM |
A special filing system is required to control the LV-ROM player via the Master AIV SCSI interface |
![]() VP415 LV-ROM Player |
The laserdisc player used in the Domesday System is unique in that it is the only player ever made which can read the LV-ROM data format of the Domesday, and a small number of other AIV, laserdiscs. |
![]() High Resolution Colour Monitor |
The Domesday System was originally supplied with an Acorn branded Philips colour monitor, but nowadays any TV set or VDU with a SCART input can be used. |
![]() Acorn Trackerball |
Acorn branded Trackerball, connected to the user port and used to control the pointer. |
![]() Laserdisc Remote Control |
The remote control supplied with the VP415. It isn't specifically required for operating the Domesday System - in fact, it is disabled whilst Domesday is running - but it can be handy to have around. |
![]() The Domesday Discs |
The Domesday Discs are two LV-ROM laserdiscs, the Community Disc and the National Disc, issued for use with the Domesday System. A small number of other LV-ROM titles followed. |
![]() SCSI Ribbon Cable |
This 50-way ribbon cable connects the Master AIV SCSI interface to the LV-ROM player |
![]() Video Leads |
Two more cables are needed to complete the Domesday System - SCART lead between the LV-ROM player and the monitor, and RGB lead from the BBC to the Player. |
![]() Manuals |
An extensive set of documentation was supplied with the Domesday System, although if you've read all my Domesday pages from end-to-end that's all you'll need! |
