BeebMaster - SJ Research MDFS

SJ Research
MDFS

Widely regarded as the finest of all the Econet Fileservers, the SJ Research MDFS...what does it stand for? Didn't I say?

MDFS is short for Modular Disc File Server. "Modular" because it can be expanded by the addition of expansion boxes. In fact, the MDFS is the third type of SJ Research file server.

The first was the HDFS, or Hard Disc File Server, which had two hard discs of about 30MB. Apparently it was massive in terms of dimensions, weight and cost so to compensate, SJ Research came up with the FDFS, yes, you've guessed it, Floppy Disc File Server, which was a bit smaller and not so expensive but it could not support Winchester drives.

Then came the crowning glory - the MDFS - which is a file server supporting floppy discs and hard discs with tape backup facility, a printer server capable of running serial and parallel printers and with hard copy error output, and terminal emulation. Phew!!!
