Here I've put the Domesday Player into overlay mode 4, which is transparent. With the title sequence from the National Disc playing, the BBC overlay is a bit difficult to read in places.

The currently seleted overlay mode doesn't change after a reset on the computer, as the mode is controlled by the player, not the computer. The default mode at power-on of the player is mode 1, which is laservision output only. This confuses many people, who think the Domesday System isn't working properly when they first swtich the player on and they can't get any of the BBC output to show up.

The idea behind the VFS Utilities ROM was to be able to set the overlay mode to be selected every time BREAK or CONTROL-BREAK is pressed, to get round these problems.
