In October 2006 I made the first changes to my MDFS in almost exactly two years. I was about to start on my attempt to copy the data from the Domesday Discs onto another media and I wanted some reliable storage so my MDFS was the obvious choice. However, I didn't have enough space on the existing discs to fit all the data without scattering it about all over the place so I decided to use a new, blank hard disc for the purpose.
Initially I connected the drive directly to the back of the MDFS and powered it from an external source, probably a BBC Master, although I can't remember exactly what. I've used this method many times before for formatting new discs but this time the MDFS took exception to it and threw a wobbler, corrupting one of the floppy discs attached and resetting all the CMOS RAM and changing its station number.
So I thought I'd better do it properly and made up a new expansion box for the purpose. The pictures above show how I made the expansion box and formatted the disc. Please click on the picture links above to learn more.
