SJ Research MDFS
Domesday Expansion Box

L is the List Discs option and after a short delay, a list of the available discs with their MDFS drive letter and details of any valid partitions and the partition name and disc capacity.

Pretty much any 50-pin SCSI hard drive, 3½" or 5¼", can be used with the MDFS. The limitation is that the maximum size of a disc partition is 60MB and 8 partitions can be written on one drive. So the maximum total size of an MDFS disc will be 480MB.

A further limitation is that only 8 partitions, across all the hard discs attached, can be made available at any one time to the MDFS when it is running in file server mode. So if you happened to have 3 hard discs, for instance, each with 8 60MB partitions, you would have 24 partitions altogether but you can only set 8 of those to show up when using the MDFS.

Not to worry too much in this instance, though, as we only have one hard drive so all 8 partitions will be available when we run the MDFS in file server mode.

Before that, we need to format it. In fact, this disc is already formatted as can be seen from the picture which shows the eight valid partitions already on the disc. I mentioned earlier that the MDFS broke down rather perplexingly during the earlier format attempt before I had the disc in the expansion box.

Also appearing in the disc list are floppy drives C and D containing my all-purpose boot disc, Hacker, which will allow access to any MDFS without having to know any of the passwords on the hard drives, and the Master disc.
