BeebMaster's
Domesday
Machine
Attempt 1
15th November 2003
This is as far as I got with my first attempt. With the Laserdisc Player on, and VFS engaged by pressing V-break, I hoped something might happen with the LV-ROM or that VFS might eventually report "drive not ready" or similar error.
Unfortunately, all that happened was this message above. The Master just sat there without doing anything else.
A bit later on, I did try changing the SCSI board I had put in for my spare one with the same result. I also tried attaching one of my 6502 Second Processors to the Master to test if a second processor was needed for VFS to work. This did not make any difference.
So, sadly, my first Domesday experiment was a failure. But as I did not have all the elements for a Domesday System, the problem could lie almost anywhere. I think it must be one or more of the following:
1. Both of the SCSI interfaces are faulty. I find this difficult to believe.
2. A further modification to the Master motherboard is required which I do not know about.
3. The Videodisc Filing System does not work properly in sideways RAM.
4. The SCSI interface only works with an internal 65C102 co-processor.
5. Nothing happens without a disc in the LV-ROM player.
6. The LV-ROM player is more broken than I thought.
I think - at least I hope - that the most likely explanation is number 5. I have since bought a set of Domesday Laserdiscs so attempt 2, in which I will try to discover the reason for my failure, will not be long in coming!
