Use Xebec
Initialise Drive Characteristics is the closest in the Xebec command set to a mode select command, but it's much simplified and only allows the actual disc geometry to be set. It also is lost every time the controller is reset, which is every power-off or even just BREAK being pressed on the Beeb.
