Yes, possibly it should be "overlaid". But I reckon Dr. Johnson would have accepted "overlayed" as well.

VP4 is transparent mode, which uses the same keying method as superimpose, ie. all the BBC picture which isn't black is overlain the laserdisc image, but the BBC picture intensity is much reduced so it creates a see-through effect.
