The exec file is generated by a BASIC source generator shown here.
The keypresses inserted into the keyboard buffer set up Insert mode and Key list mode. These settings are read from the CMOS RAM by Edit, but as the BBC doesn't have non-volatile memory, the results are unpredictable so we solve this by forcing these options.
