The main difference between the prototype and the finished module is the presence of the Econet socket. Perhaps at this stage it had not been decided to include the socket as standard on the Master circuit board.

I can only guess that the original intention was for the module to plug into the Master motherboard with the Econet socket accessible through a gap in the backplate.
