Here's a picture of the main board, and if I'd paid more attention to the greenery blooming around the battery and nearby components, I might have been able to save this MDFS. As it is, when I took a look at it again in the summer of 2015, it deteriorated rapidly from being in a working state to not working at all.
There are no bodges here on this unmodified MDFS so it's a terrible shame it's no longer in working order.
