It's not a very exact science, because I discovered much later that the FileStore Formatter doesn't know how to deal with defects on the E20 disc! So whilst we would have observed the disc activity light appearing to get stuck on red for a good while, the only information we get back from the FileStore is an activity timeout. A list of bad sectors would have been nice!
