Acorn FileStore E01
Here is the back of the FileStore E01. On the very left is the usual 5-pin DIN Econet port for connecting the FileStore to the net. It connects straight into a network socket box just like any other workstation. The FileStore does not need to be attached to a BBC micro to function. The whole point about FileStores is that they are standalone file servers which means that you do not have to devote one of your precious Beebs to sitting there running the net - the FileStore does it all for you.
There are two ribbon cable connectors next to the Econet port. The top one is called the "FileStore Bus" and is the same as the 1 MHz Bus. This is used to connect a FileStore E20 hard disc to the FileStore to provide more storage space. It is not there to connect to a BBC! Do not do this unless you want strange hissing noises coming out of the BBC speaker and all manner of squiggles all over the screen!
Underneath the FileStore Bus is a parallel printer port because the FileStore can act as a printer server as well as a file server. When I put the FileStore back together, I connected a parallel printer lead to the port so I have the option of attaching a printer at a later date without having to take the house to bits to get at the FileStore.
The on-off switch is next to the two connectors and is the same rocker switch as on the Master Series.
The FileStore box is identical to the disc drive/power supply box of the Master Compact, one of a number of examples of Acorn's resourceful design policy.
