Acorn FileStore E01
Here I have removed the Econet module to reveal the chips which generate the Econet clock signal. The FileStore is notorious for producing a "clock clash" where two clocks are present on the network and cause associated havoc. I have not had any problems with this and I think the FileStore disables its own clock if it detects a clock signal on the network when it is powered up. I think where a problem could arise is if an external clock box is switched on after the FileStore is already running. The FileStore clock can be disabled in any event by removing the link jumpers which set the mark and space multiplier for the clock speed.

It is always interesting to know how Acorn described their machines internally and the legends on Acorn circuit boards are often a good guide. Quite often they are cryptic, for instance the BBC Model A, B and B+ which do not mention the computer name at all, and many of the Archimedes series which are similarly non-commital about what machine they form the insides to. The circuit board here describes itself as "Acorn Computer File Store Disc Controller". That's a bit of an understatement, perhaps, as the thing is much more than just a disc controller, and it doesn't help us to identify whether we are looking at an E01, E01S, E20, E40 or E60! |
