I've put the lid back on now. The instability improved over time, although sometimes a bit of nudge is still needed. With the lid on, you have to give the LV-ROM player a sharp twist by grabbing it by its diagonals and turning the unit slightly. A slightly kinder - but sometimes less effective - alternative is to put it in search mode with the remote control.
