It's never a good idea to leave the Domesday System unattended. I came back to an 'orrible grinding noise from the player, and the copier had crashed. I think the drive head was bashing against the back of the player, which it does sometimes if it gets upset. Although apparently in still mode, the frame number was still increasing.
