Starting the
Community
Disc

The pictures above show the starting sequence for the Domesday Community Disc. I made this picture set in September 2010, replacing the original set from 2004, using my Domesday 2010 setup. At this point, you may recall, my good VP415 player had gone for a burton and so I was relying on the restored, "wonky" VP415 I had repaired earlier in the year in order to have a working Domesday setup at all.

When I made this picture set in September 2010, it was the first time I had used the Domesday Discs since February 2007, and the first time I had used my Domesday kit as a proper Domesday System since that time. It was also the first time, using my RGB DVD recorder, that I was able to correctly record screen images of the Domesday System in operation, so this was a very exciting and important moment for me.

Although very much in working order, the "wonky" player suffered from poor picture quality, in particular a very noticeable horizontal streaking when displaying light blue colours. I believe that this is a known problem with early laserdisc players. There may be a way to address it, but I haven't looked into it yet.

In July 2011, I repaired the PSU in good VP415, bringing it back into service for the twenty-fifth anniversary, and I spent some time in September and October 2011 re-doing the worst of the images from Domesday 2010. The picture set above, then, is predominately from September 2010 with some retakes done in September 2011. I hope you will click on the picture links above to learn more.
