Here we see the two options for communicating with the VP415 player - infra red or wire connected with a little jack plug.

There's a socket at the back of the VP415 for connecting the wire and if you use this method, you must also correctly set the Infra Red/Wired toggle switch at the back of the player.

The official explanation for these options, according to the VP415 Operating Instructions, is that some implementations of the AIV system might require the player to be hidden, making the infra-red sensor panel inaccessible, and causing the need for a direct wired connection instead.
