Domesday 2010
Serial Cable
This is a crucial part of Domesday 2010, and something I've not used in any of my previous Domesday incarnations: a serial cable.
To control the LV-ROM player by serial connection requires a cable with a 25-pin D-connector at the LV-ROM end and a 5-pin domino type DIN connector at the BBC end.
The pinouts of the LV-ROM 25-pin connector are as follows, with only 5 pins being required, which is rather handy since there are only 5 pins available at the BBC end:
| Pin number | Signal |
| 2 | Transmit |
| 3 | Receive |
| 5 | Clear to Send |
| 7 | Ground |
| 20 | Ready to Send |
Now, unfortunately, I do always get terribly confused with pinouts at the Beeb end, whether the diagram you look it is showing the socket looking into the BBC from the outside, or looking out from inside, or whether it's the solder side of the plug or the other way round. And it doesn't help that Acorn went and chose for their serial port a connector which can be plugged in using any of four different orientations.
So, if you want to use the pinouts above to make up your own LV-ROM serial lead, I'll have to ask you to look up the pin assignments at the BBC end in the Master Welcome Guide. I was lucky, this lead here was already made up, I just found it in a wardrobe, but I don't really know where it came from, and all I had to do was move a wire from one pin to another at the LV-ROM end and it worked.
If it helps, here's a picture of the cable dismantled at each end:
