The star symbol tells us that a fatal error has been detected, and the diagnostic process halts. Any error code lower than 30 is classed as a fatal error which causes the process to stop. Errors with higher numbers are reported, but the self-test procedure continues.

According to the service manual, error 9 is "framelock", whatever that means, and error 142 isn't listed! So much for diagnostics!
