Diagnostics
I knew that this current problem was due to a faulty module H, because the player worked fine after all the module-swapping, until I put the original module H back in. So, the next thing I wanted to try was to repair the faulty module H.
The service manual details adjustments for each module, which are to be tried out in conjunction with the Philips test disc, and also bits of kit like a multimeter and oscilloscope. Well, I haven't got a scope or the test disc, so of necessity there's going to be quite a lot of guesswork involved.
Many of the modules have variable resistors on them, which are to be adjusted after following the directions in the service manual, so I reckoned there would be no harm in tweaking the VRs on module H. This picture is the result of a bit of twiddling, ie. not much difference from before. Check mode isn't very instructive either, telling us that no errors have been detected.
