After this I went to bed, but I put *TIME into the keyboard buffer so at least I would have an idea the next morning as to when the process finished.

Except that I forgot to set the clock. The batteries in my Domesday Machine are flat and I can't replace them easily as it uses the shrink-wrapped variety rather than the battery holder variety as the SCSI board is in the way of where the holder would go.
