Rescuing the
Domesday
Data

Data transfer rates on Econet are not spectacular. Remember that it was invented in 1981 when the most RAM you had available was about 4K, so when it comes to copying files of 100MB, it does take a while!

Logcopy doesn't give you any indication of the progress being made so a way round this when dealing with Econet is to interrogate the file server from another station. This is what Station 112 is doing here. I can look at the directory the files are being copied into, firstly to see which file we have reached, but more importantly in connection with the big files, if I use *INFO, I can read the current length of any file so I know how much has been copied.
