This is the left-hand side of the Data Recorder. There is an earphone jack, just in case you want to listen to those lovely screeching noises on your headphones, and a seven-pin DIN lead to connect to the BBC cassette port.

If a full 7-pin lead is used then the BBC cassette filing system uses the motor relay to start and stop the tape recorder automatically. If you only have a 5-pin lead then you have to operate the tape deck manually.

Naturally you have to press PLAY yourself in any event, the Beeb doesn't do that for you!

Tapes were the staple form of computer storage back in the 1980s before floppy discs and hard discs became commonplace. Of course, it won't be long before floppy discs are a thing of the past...
